Dear Parents,

to work at your own pace (and make it work with your schedule). If you have any questions or troubles, please email your child’s teacher for help.


On Friday, May 1st each class will have a Google Meet, so students can see each other and their teacher to say hello. The link will be emailed to you 10
minutes before the scheduled meet, so you are able to log on. It can be quite difficult if everyone is trying to speak at once, so please help your child
mute themselves, and they can unmute when called upon. We will be doing a short Show and Tell. If your child would like to share something special from home (i.e., a creative project, a pet, a special toy etc.) they will have a minute to explain it to their class. If your child would just like to be present and not share anything, that is fine too!

Week of April 20, 2020

Dear Parents, 


It was wonderful to see so many of our students at our Google Meet on Friday.  Thank you for all
your efforts to support your children. We truly appreciate everything that you are doing at home.  

This week our math worksheets are from the Teachers Pay Teachers website.  The worksheets
are free but we are unable to post them on our website due to copyright rules.  In order to
access the worksheets, parents will need to sign up for a free account. You can access the
website by following this link:
We realize that this requires an additional step, but these worksheets will provide students with
practice adding canadian coins in an easy to follow format. 

Another great website you may want to access is Dreambox Math.  It is an excellent resource
and it is currently free for families.  The program is intuitive and will increase the difficulty of
tasks as your child progresses. For this reason, please ensure that you make an account for each
child in your family.  If an older child plays on a younger child’s account and answers questions
correctly, the program will increase the difficulty of the questions. You can set up an account

Week of March 30, 2020

In Physical Education we have been working on aim and accuracy when throwing. We did lots of activities using beanbags and wiffle balls.  Try setting up targets using sidewalk chalk or masking tape on the side of your house or on your driveway.  As your aim improves, try throwing from further away.  We have been using these success criteria to help with our underhand throws:

 Focus on the target.   Keep eyes in the direction that the object is to travel.   Swing arm fully.  Throw ball from in front of body. Transfer weight through execution - Step with opposite foot so that it’s in line with intended target. Release ball at approximately waist height.  If you're having trouble hitting the targets, move closer and try varying the force you are using.  

Remember the most important thing is to have fun and get some exercise!
Science

Week of March 23, 2020


Dear Students and Families,

I hope that as you read this post you are all safe at home and feeling healthy. Not returning to school after the March Break is a new experience that we are all navigating together (but apart) for the first time. If you need anything over the next couple of weeks, please email me at faye.bourassa@ocsb.ca.

As we wait to see how things progress, I will provide you with some ideas of curriculum based tasks to keep your children busy and learning, without being too much for them or you to work through. I know many parents must be very overwhelmed trying to work from home, and care for their children who must also remain at home. Feel free to use what is useful and just remember that your safety and well being is more important than the curriculum right now.

Language
The five new word wall words this week are:
mine, ride, five, nice, might
Please practice both reading and writing these words. You can use pencil/pen and paper, white boards, sidewalk chalk or whatever materials you have to write with at home. I even saw a fun activity where you put shaving cream on a cookie sheet, and then have your child print them with his/her hands in the shaving cream, and wipe it out when finished.
The word family of the week is the “ight” word family. Practice adding different letters to the front of the word family to make new words (light, fight, night, right etc).

Students should be reading to you and with you every day, when possible. If you don’t have books at home, remember you can log into their raz kids account. You can use the app or go to www.kidsa-z.com. The username is fbourassa2 and your child knows his/her password. Email with any difficulties.
Writing:
We just wrote our first complete paragraph before the break. We wrote using guided writing. First, I modelled writing 3 complete sentences about a topic for the body of the paragraph. The sentences should start with a capital, have finger spaces, make sense, and end with a period. For example, students can write sentences about what they are doing each day at home. The content of what they write is not as important as the daily practice itself. Then, with the students, I brainstormed sentences that would introduce the topic of the paragraph. For example, if your child was writing about her day, she could write "Let me tell you about my day." or "Today was a lot of fun." or "I had a busy day." We added a topic sentence to the beginning of our writing. Finally, we practiced adding a concluding sentence. For now, I had them add a final sentence telling what they thought or felt about the topic. We came up with sentences similar to "I think today was a great day." or " I really loved my day." Students added this concluding sentence at the bottom of the paragraph. Then, they added an appropriate title to their writing. This is a lot of work and could be done over several days. Students could write about their pets, their families, a game they played etc. For many students, it may be easiest to write the 3 sentences of the body first. Then, add an intro. sentence and a concluding sentence.
In addition, before the March Break we had may groups of students working together as authors and illustrators during Quiet Time and Free Time. Several students had already completed books and shared them with the class. Encourage your child to write/illustrate as many stories as he/she can imagine. If you have materials to staple/bind the stories that's great. If not, just bundle the pages and we can bind them when we return to school. It will be lots of fun to share our stories with the class and add them to the class library.
Math:
We were just about to finish our graphing unit. The students really enjoyed creating survey questions, recording answers in tally charts and making pictographs and bar graphs that showed the data. Encourage your child to make surveys and record the information in tally charts and graphs. They could record types of stuffies, colours of socks, types of canned soup etc. Next, we will be starting fresh with a telling time unit. The focus for this week should be to help your child learn to tell time on an analog and digital clock, to the hour. Emphasize the long and short hands and what each represents. Analog clocks can be tricky! The long hand shows the minutes and the short hand shows the hours. Each big number on the clock represents a 5 minute interval but the hour is based on 60 minutes. You can also add a focus of benchmark times in their lives, for example what time they usually wake up, have breakfast, have lunch, dinner and bedtime and whether they happen in the am or the pm. This should be a good focus for the week.
TVO Kids has a game to reinforce telling time to the hour and half hour.
Math Flips is a website that has content that I would normally include in our daily Number Talk.  You can print out pdfs or access it through Google Slides. The content of these math flips is a great way to build number sense with your child and encourage him/her to explain the reasoning used to determine the answer.  You can access the website through this link:

End of March Break Update

End of March Break Update

As the official March Break comes to an end, but we do not return to school, we are all sharing a new experience.  As the week progresses, I will be in touch with you, providing suggestions for activities to promote learning at home. I will also send out ideas for websites, activities etc. on my twitter account @BourassaFaye.  First and foremost, please take care of yourself and your children. Do what you can do with regard to learning activities and most importantly stay safe. I look forward to seeing you all back in class as soon as possible.

January Updates


We are wrapping up units in  math (2D geometry) and science (Daily and Seasonal Change).  From here we will begin to investigate Linear Measurement in Math. Students will begin by creating their own rulers using non-standard units (small equal squares).  We will use the rulers in class to measure items and compare their lengths (shorter. equal and longer).  Then, the rulers will be sent home for students to practice measuring lengths at home.  In Science, our next unit will focus on Materials, Objects and Everyday Structures. 
In Language, students are reading at their "just right" reading levels and bringing home books to practice their reading each week. Please try to have your child read the story to someone several times each week.  Also, continue to review the weekly word wall words. These are very common words that your child will need to read and write on a regular basis. In combination with our Drama unit, we will begin to rehearse short plays based on Fairy Tales using the reader's theatre format.  Students will each take on a role, and practice reading their parts fluently and with expression. Students will also create masks/puppet faces to wear/hold while they perform their parts.  As a culminating activity, we will perform our reader's theatre plays for other classes in the school. In writing, students are being challenged to write 2-3 complete sentences on a topic.  Each sentence should begin with a capital letter and end with appropriate punctuation.  Word wall words should be spelled correctly and unfamiliar words should be sounded out phonetically.  Words need to be printed legibly on the line with finger spaces between each word. Finally, only proper nouns and the first letter in each sentence should have upper case letters - no random capitals should be printed in words.  At home, encourage your child to write a complete sentence on any topic and help him/her to meet the criteria listed above.

December Updates

December is here and the Advent Season has begun. It was wonderful to see so many families at our Advent mass last week.  The students did a wonderful job singing the songs and participating in the mass.

We will be reviewing all of our Word Wall Words to date this week, so please go over all the words in your child's word box with him/her. Last week, we learned how to write a card. This week, we will add a Christmas Card writing center to our language centers.  We are finishing up our unit on patterning in Math and will begin to focus on 2D shapes - naming them, identifying how many corners/vertices and sides they have, and sorting them according to different sorting rules.

In Science, we will wrap up our unit on the Daily and Seasonal Changes by creating a poster of our favourite season, and conferencing with the teacher to show what we know.  We are practicing a song for the school concert on Thursday, December 19th at 1 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend! 
Reminder:  The grade 1B class is asked to donate gravy and stuffing mix for our Christmas hamper project.  Thank you to all the families that have already sent in donations.
