Monday, October 14 - Thanksgiving - no school
Thursday, October 17 - Scholastic orders due
***Friday is library day each week - please return library books each week.  If there is no school on a Friday, we will keep our books until the following week.
Wednesday and Friday are gym days.
Change of clothes - if you have not yet done so, please send in change of clothes, including socks and underwear in a ziploc bag, labelled with your child's name.  Fall can be wet and muddy!
Learning Updates
Language - we are focusing on letter sounds, including the vowel sounds. A great website for this review to work on is www.starfall.com. It goes through individual letters and sounds (click on ABC's) and also then moves into word families (click on Learn to Read).  Each week we practice reading and spelling our sight words and short a word families (at, ad, an).  We are almost done writing Name of the Day books for every member of our class.  This helps us focus on initial letter sounds for each name, as well as the number of syllables, vowels, consonants etc.  We have also started to write short pattern sentences using a sentence frame.  Ex. I like..., I can...   Students are encouraged to spell a word/words to complete the sentence using letter sounds, especially the initial and final sounds. We are learning to leave a finger space between words and to put a period at the end of each sentence.

***Remember to spend a couple of minutes several times a week to practice reading all of the sight words to date.  Also, if a card was sent home with letters/sounds to practice, please do so daily as your child will need to know these before progressing to independent reading and writing.

Math - We continue to work on our numbers, especially the numbers from 10-20. Then, we will focus on numbers up to 30.  Students are learning to count, name the numbers, write the numbers, recognize and show their quantities using dot plates, ten frames and rekenreks (number racks).  Five and Ten are important anchors and we are learning to compare numbers using less and more - i.e. I know that it is 9 because it is 1 less than 10.  We are also learning to skip count by 2s and 5s, using rhymes and songs.
Phys. Ed. - This week we are finishing up  Our first unit  "Welcome to the Gym" , where students played different games and activities that reinforced the rules and expectations in the gym. Next week, we will move on to an "Introduction to fitness" unit which has many different games to get their heart rates up and provide them with cooperative activities to work on together.
Religion/Family Life - We begin each day with a prayer circle, led by a student. We have been learning the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be. At lunch, we sing Johnny Appleseed Grace before our noontime meal. In our first unit, we have been learning how God calls us by name.  We have also learned about the parable of the Good Samaritan. We will be relating this story to lessons on how to be a good digital citizen.
Science - Our unit is on Daily and Seasonal Change.  We have learned about sequences and cycles, including the days of the week and the months of the year. Please have your child review them every so often and ask questions such as "If today is Monday, what day was yesterday? what day will tomorrow be?".  We have learned that the seasons are a cycle. We will continue to learn about the changes that take place in each season.
Art - We are creating art as we learn about different types of lines and the primary colours.
